profile

Profile

I have a strong background in both Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine having trained in both in New Zealand and in the UK. After completing my PhD I became a Consultant Respiratory Physician in 2001, but, with my colleagues contribute to the acute General Medicine rota. I see adults with respiratory problems such as breathlessness, cough, chest infections and pneumonia, suspected cancer, and suspected pulmonary emboli / DVT.

I also see patients with general medical problems where the symptoms do not necessarily suggest the appropriate specialist to see. Where patients have multiple medical problems they may see a number of specialists each with their own management plan; in these patients a general medical review to formulate a cohesive management plan that the patient can understand can be very helpful.

In 1999 I set up an outpatient diagnostic service for DVT which reduced inpatient bed days by over 90%, and advisory service for diagnosis and management of PE.

I have a strong background in research in a number of respiratory conditions (and in PE), presenting the results at international conferences.

I have been a teacher and lecturer for over twenty years, teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, and lecturing regionally and nationally to GPs and allied health professionals, and internationally at symposia, workshops and annual conferences of specialist societies.

philosophy

Philosophy

I believe that taking time to understand patients concerns and to listen carefully to their complaint is vital to a good consultation, and to the doctor-patient relationship. A holistic approach, not purely medicine based, is important, as is the involvement of other health professionals when appropriate.
