Profile

Richard qualified from the Westminster Hospital, London in 1980. After house jobs at St Stephen's Hospital in Chelsea, Senior House Officer posts at University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, he completed a PhD thesis at Cambridge University. His Specialist Orthopaedic training was undertaken at the Whittington and Westminster Hospitals in London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Colchester and Black Notley Hospitals in Essex and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

In 1994, Richard was appointed to St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, as a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, with a special interest in hip surgery. Since 2004, his NHS practice has been based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where he is the Director of Research. Richard was made Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for St George’s University of London in 2013.

Richard is one of the UK's most experienced practitioners in arthroscopic hip surgery, muscle sparing hip replacement, hip resurfacing and complex hip replacement. He undertakes approximately 500 hip operations per year.

Richard publishes regularly in the peer-reviewed orthopaedic literature and is a regular faculty member at national and international conferences on hip and knee surgery. He has been involved in the design, development and evaluation of hip and knee replacements and continues advises several Orthopaedic companies on the development of new devices and surgical techniques. His current research interests are in patterns of hip instability, the pre-clinical and clinical evaluation of new implants, outcome and surveillance studies in joint replacement surgery and health economics.

Richard has been a panel member of St George's Medical School selection committee since 2002. He was an expert advisor to National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) on Hip Prostheses in 2000. He is board member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and the British Hip Society.

Philosophy

If I can relieve pain and restore normal mobility to 95% of the patients on whom I operate, I am probably doing my job well. Seeing patients enjoy a good outcome is the best reward I know.
